Addition / Multiplication Card Game (Math)

*for this image the answer would be 19 (+) or 84 (x)

This one is fairly simple so I won’t go into much detail.  All you need is a deck of cards per group

  • Each group, it can be pairs or groups of 3 gets a deck of cards
  • Remove the face cards (or if you like you can use them to represent 11 and 12)
  • Divide the deck to the students (if there is a third they are the ‘ref’)
  • Each student flips over their first card and must add / multiply the two cards
  • The student that gets the correct answer the quickest wins both cards
  • The ref can judge, which means they also need to do the math
  • You can play until one player is done all of their cards or for a set time
  • When the game is done you can switch partners, or change positions with the ref

Modifications:

  • Students can play this game alone to work on adding and multiplying random numbers, they just flip two cards at a time
  • You can play this as a big group with each member from a group playing another, the group with the highest score in total wins
  • You can have 3 or 4 students play together and add up all the cards to work on adding multiple numbers at once

This game is great to get students familiar with addition and multiplication, and will help them gain confidence fairly quickly.  You can have prizes or rewards for the student or group with the most points, or you can not count points at all.

Enjoy!
